The ferry trip from Naples was smooth and quiet, we went to bed looking forward to a good night’s sleep and out arrival in Palermo scheduled for 10am the following morning. All was well untill a tannoy announcement at 6am announcing that we would be docking at 7.20am and all cabins should be vacated before arrival. Scramble!!
The journey from Milan to Naples was interesting, it should have taken about 6 hours, but we arrived 30 minutes late. As we traveled south the landscape changed becoming more Mediterranean with olive groves, vineyards and iconic Cyprus trees. We stopped in Florence and Rome, but you can’t see much from the rail track.
The train from Paris to Milan was very comfortable and the seven hour journey passed easily. The scenery through the Alps was spectacular and we enjoyed sharing it ‘live’ with our friend Gail in rural Ontario, it really is a small and easily connected world.
About an hour before we arrived in Milan we received a text from Franny, an old friend from Cambridge, by sheer chance she and her partner John were also heading towards Milan on a train from Brindisi with a one night stop before catching the train to Paris the next morning. Thanks to the wonders of WhatsApp and Google Maps we arranged to meet for dinner and spent a couple of hours catching up on each others news.
We arrived in Paris about 10 minutes behind schedule after an uneventful journey. Our hotel is about 15 minutes from the Gare du Nord and we found it easily on foot following the directions provided by the travel agent, Byway.
Well we have made it to St Pancras and the station is as busy as usual. The night train was great, the only disappointment was the absence of hot water in the shower at Paddington – it made for a bracing start to the day..
We have realised we have left our guide books at home! We will have to be a bit creative with our planning and navigation.
