Milan

Just passing through!

The train from Paris to Milan was very comfortable and the seven hour journey passed easily. The scenery through the Alps was spectacular and we enjoyed sharing it ‘live’ with our friend Gail in rural Ontario, it really is a small and easily connected world.

About an hour before we arrived in Milan we received a text from Franny, an old friend from Cambridge, by sheer chance she and her partner John were also heading towards Milan on a train from Brindisi with a one night stop before catching the train to Paris the next morning. Thanks to the wonders of WhatsApp and Google Maps we arranged to meet for dinner and  spent a couple of hours catching up on each others news.

Bergen

Christmas In September.

Gosh, time flies and the blog waits for no one!

We arrived in Bergen just in time to drop our bags and head out to dinner. We were close to the historic Bryggen area, a run of colourful historic wooden wharf buildings on the harbour. The receptionist recommended the Unicorn restaurant in one of those buildings so we set off to find it. The restaurant was on the first floor approached via a very old wooden staircase. At the top was a dark landing and a solid door, we had no idea what to expect. We opened the door and were greeted by a cozy, bustling restaurant furnished with mismatched antique furniture and lamps, like an old family dining room. The waiter led us to a table by the window and we had another great meal, we all had fish cooked to a variety of traditional Norwegian recipes.

Fiji, part 1 (and part 2)

Denarau
The Westin, Denarau

Our first stop in Fiji was at the Westin Hotel on Denarau Island just outside Fiji’s second biggest town Nadi on the west coast. The capital is Suva, about 3 hours away. Denarau Island was created by draining swamp land to create a focus for the growing tourist industry, there is a golf course in the middle and around the outside they have built two Sheratons, a Hilton, a Sofitel and the Westin (there maybe others but those are the ones we saw). There is also a Marina, Port Denarau, where all the fishing and diving trips and day cruises go from. It is all very upmarket and glossy but apart from the lovely Fijian people who work there it is all a bit generic and sterile. The most bizarre thing about the Denarau Island holiday paradise is, there is no beach!! Our room was very comfortable, the pool was nice and there were two restaurants and a café. The one outstanding feature of the hotel was the breakfast buffet!! It had everything you could think of including a juice bar where you could blend your own juices from bowls of fruit, veg herbs and spices. It even had complimentary sparkling wine (Blanc de Blanc) every morning just in case you needed to pep up the orange juice. Continue reading Fiji, part 1 (and part 2)
